2017 Zforce 800 won't idle
« on: May 29, 2022, 12:10:03 PM »
Hey guys, I need some help..

Yesterday out on the trail a section of my snorkel right after the engine let go and the throttle wouldn't shut off when off the peddle so I had to hit the engine kill switch.

Got out, inspected and saw the part of the pipe that came loose, reattached and started it up only to find out it wouldn't idle, it would stumble and die.

Machine worked fine when starting in gear and applying a little throttle to keep it running, it just won't idle.

I read something about the engine kill switch causing this sort of problem, but I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that's what I should be looking at, or if there is something else I should also investigate.

If I'm not mistaken there is a throttle position sensor somewhere on the machine, and I'm wondering if taking air in direct to the engine and then hitting the kill switch has thrown it out of calibration or something?

Is there a way to reset the ECU and get the machine idling properly again?

Any suggestions would be appreciated it.

I also noticed prior to this happening it seemed like the machine ran a little bit rich and I noticed the mileage on my Z800 doesn't seem as good as the mileage on my 2018 Z1000.

Thanks guys!

So that I better understand, your snorkel system comes directly off the throttle body to I assume a filter up high somewhere and because of the engine being rubber mounted, it pulled loose from the throttle body at some point allowing 100% unfiltered air into the engine for an unknown length of time...enough time that enough dirt crusted-up on the butterfly plate to stick it partly open. You worked it some, got it to shut, replaced the snorkel and now it won't idle. Is that about it?

Minimum the idle air control valve is full of contaminates and probably plugged and will need to be cleaned. Not sure how to do that if even possible. The air temp/mass air flow sensor is also contaminated and must be cleaned. It is also very likely all that trash has taken out your top end so you will need to do a compression test, a leak-down test and check the valve lash to determine the extent of the damage. Loosing air filtration, even for a few moments, is the worst thing that can happen to an off-road engine... besides overheating.

Sorry, no... I should have been more clear in my original post.

The pipe disconnected just before the throttle body and the engine ran about 3 seconds before I hit the kill switch (I'm assuming because of what seemed like a the WOT situation and am assuming it was from the lack of drag on air flow).

I don't believe anything too terrible got into the engine (not overly dusty and I wasn't driving through water at the time), while of course running unfiltered is far less than ideal..!

Because the engine ran fine on the way home other than not being able to idle, I suspect it's something electrical.. but I'm not sure, and that's why I've come here for opinions and guidance :)

I thought I saw a thread somewhere suggesting it could have something to do with the engine kill switch, but I can't seem to find it now..?

The kill switch is not involved.

Given the location of the failure ...

Try cleaning the T-MAP sensor with MAP cleaner (don't use carb or brake cleaner!). It's located in the intake manifold. A dirty T-MAP will certainly impact idling. Inspect it to make sure it didn't get damaged.

If you can get hold of a ECU reader, check the values coming from the T-MAP sensor, and its response times.

After that, focus on the Idle Air Control Valve.
