2017 800 ex z force carrier bearing
« on: February 08, 2022, 08:12:00 PM »
I was stupid tonight. My carriers bearing is making an awful noise and wobbled bad. Figured no big deal, I’ll change the bearings in it. Got the entire drive shaft out. Took the front shaft off the carrier. Took back one off. No biggie. Put the carrier in my vice with plastic jaws. Took out snap ring on one side. Flip it over and take the other snap ring out. Took it out of the vise and was flipping it around to see how to get that press color off. That’s when I messed up. That’s when I notice that the distance from the inner end of the splines to the bearing has more shaft distance on one side than the other. I don’t remember what direction was forward or backwards. Can any one help me out?  Really appreciate it if so. Also, how do I get that press collar off?  Just press it off when I’m pressing the shaft out of the bearings?

Thanks all

NMK thanks for the reply. I have the service manual with that pic, but you really can’t tell what side is longer or shorter.

From the pic it looks clear to me but maybe if it was in my hand it wouldn't be. Looks like the carrier holds both bearings with snap rings on either side and the shaft slides through both bearings from the engine side to the diff side and is retained by one spacer/retainer, then both yokes with drive lines just slide on and they just bolt to their flanges on either end. If there is a difference in the way the bearings set in the carrier housing I suspect that one way both shafts will slide in and bolt to their flanges and the other..one won't. Just guessing though as I haven't had the "pleasure" of dealing with mine...yet. :)

I doubt that it will make a difference, but I’ll send a close up picture today of the actual unit. I do appreciate your help though.

If you are going to upload a photo as an attachment, then first, it can't be too large. Click on the "+" next to attachments, select it from your P/C like I am doing in the vid. Otherwise upload it to a hosting service like Imgur and post a link in your post. Oh and I removed the attachment from this post.

Hello. I figured it out. That back collar does not come off the shaft. I put it in my press and it punched the shaft and front collar right off. Now I’m having an issue getting the old bearings out. Any suggestions? I’m using a 12 ton press. Probably just to chicken to really crank on it😂. But I have a heck of a lot of pressure on the outer rings of the bearings and they aren’t moving. I even sprayed them last night and today with PB Blaster.

No one else I know if has had to use a press. Spray then down good with PB, let it soak a while then hit the frame with some heat..from a torch. Should expand it enough to get them to move. Chinese metal rusts bad...and fast.
