having an issue with my 800 trail,  on flat surface it can only reach about 40mph.  uphills its topping out at 27-28mph.  i can rev in neutral up over 7000rpms so does not seem starved for fuel or air.  current miles is only 800.

Things i checked:
airfilter - was pretty clean
belt - looks like it has plenty of life left.

Anything else everyone can recommend to check?  no dealers very close to me for service.

If you have been running the stock OE paper filter, that's about all the miles you will get out of the top end riding in moderately dusty areas...so if that's the case, do a compression check and while you are at it, check and set the valves. Might also want to see if there are ant stuck calipers making brakes drag.
