1.5 Wheel Spacers on EX's
« on: June 13, 2016, 08:35:38 PM »
Greetings Folks,
I installed the wheel spacers on one of our EX's this evening, and took it for a ride.

MUCH more stable, especially in corners, biggest difference is that w/o them, the back of the machines like to slide around the corners, with them, they rally don't slide much, and you can FLY through the corners....but there is a danger. If you come into some pebbly ground, and you're going too fast, the front end will push out, instead of the rear coming around. So anybody else does this, go test it. They're REALLY nice in terms of how much they improve the ride, going straight, over bumps & also in corners. Plus I do think they make the machine a little more beastly looking....pics below are of both machines, one wit & the other without the spacers. For $75.00 a machine, a real nice improvement. My machine now has a  62 inch wheelbase instead of 59, so a foot wider than the trail models, for us that's great because there's very few trails here that are restricted width wise.

Yeah they helped my 53 a lot too. Still have to know you can hit corners too fast though...lol

Like the tires! :)

Putting spacers on wont make it slide less at all.  It will actually make it slide MORE because the width keeps it planted better instead of rolling up on the suspension.  Its all about the transfer of kinetic energy.  Your transferring the the energy into a slide instead of transferring the energy into lifting the suspension of the inside wheels. The front end pushes more in the corners for that reason also.  You may also notice a softer ride (if you left all suspension settings the same) with the spacers on.  It does that because the point of force (where the wheel contacts the ground) is not further out thus giving it more leverage.  Thats not a problem but you may be riding slightly lower than before and bumps will make the machines suspension sag more.  Its the same effect as going with a lighter spring.  Like i said no issue...just something to be aware of.
I can imagine a world completely at peace.  A world where there are no weapons, no war, and no violence at all.  And I can imagine us taking over that world because they would never expect it.

Respectfully, Chuddly, the machines slide a lot LESS with the spacers, not more.

They corner a lot better, now, no question. The only time they push to the outside of a corner is on really loose gravel. Before the spacers, the rear wheels had a major tendency to slide out from underneath you, the rear would come around, pretty easy; now, it bites; I can go around corners that aren't pebbly a LOT faster than I'd have ever dared w/o the spacers.

Some sliding and control may have a lot to do with how weight is transferred and that may be an effect of how the tires react to different situations such as lateral loading. I think tread pattern has a lot to do with any control situation. I love my Reapers in every way except for hard cornering and power sliding because of just how the center tread rib can cut or bite-in on the outside, stop sliding and can cause an instant roll-over.

In any case, know your machine, have fun and be safe.

I tried spacers on the rears only today, on machine Number 2; the rear tires slide EASY like that....added the other ones to the front & all is good.

Also set the shocks to "FAST", seemed like the ride was softer, so pray tell; what's the deal here? "Fast" is softer, "Slow" is  firmer? Thanks in advance-Chris

Yeah...its a valve(the one on the top). The faster the oil flows through the compression valve the easier it compresses...ie the softer the ride but it gets that mushy feel and body roll if open too far. Same for the rebound valve. The faster the oil can pass through that valve the faster the shock extends back out when compressed. Too much there and it will feel like a bounce or too "springy".

Got everything excepting the "it's the valve on the top", the one I'm talking about is on the bottom of the shock, marked Fast & Slow, are we talking the same thing?

The one on the bottom is the rebound adjustment. The one on top is the compression.

On the EX yes, front and back. On the non-EX, just the fronts. Guess I need to do a video...:)

Oh..really guys? Ok, when I get the chance. In the meantime you can set yours like mine and go from there. There are 19 full clicks on both adjustments. On any of these valves if you go to the end and it doesn't click...like its 3/4s of a click, back it back to the last click then do the count.

Open all compressions, the ones at the top at the res's, to the fast direction until it stops. Don't force it, then go 4 clicks back toward the Slow. Do this with all shocks. The 53s don't have compressions on back so Jogon30, yours and mine are just on the front.  Next open all rebounds to the fast direction just until they stop. Then close them all 6 clicks to the Slow side.

Now the EX will ride differently then the 53 and one with more weight will also ride differently. The rebounds are probably pretty close to where they need to be so focus on the compressions from here first. If it seems too soft, mushy or had excessive body roll and the preloads are set correctly, then go one click at a time to the slow. If the back feels OK but the front is the one that feels soft, just do the fronts. Same goes for a stiff feeling except you click to the fast direction to soften that up.
