Operational Observations
« on: July 15, 2022, 10:43:27 PM »
At cold engine start-up, the idle starts at 1500 rpm and stays there during warm-up and at operating temperature.

Engine coolant temp during hot temp days when stopped at intersections, will go as high as 208 F. When moving, it is usually between 180-194 F. Not sure when the fan kicks in, probably around 200 F.

Correction - When moving, it is usually between 176-180 F at 60 mph, and 182-186 F at 30 mph).

Radiator cap looks hokey. It isn’t the commonly used metal pressure cap, it is a plastic threaded cap.

Slipper clutch works good, easy start from stop... similar to most other bikes.

Gear box is smooth, shifting up and down gears with ease and no false neutrals yet.

Gearing is about the same as other bikes in this class. Gear 6 is running about 4000 rpm at 60 mph. Plenty of torque, can be in gear 4 at 35-40 mph and pulls away easily.

Two rider modes, Sport and ECO and can be changed on the fly. ECO mode is pretty much worthless except for rain, winter riding, or first-time riders.

Turn signal switch does not have a tactile click, just press lightly left or right and it actuates. I'm still looking at display to confirm it is activated.

Bar end mirrors are solid, no vibration blurriness. Clutch and brake levers are adjustable.

The gear box/shifting - I thought it was smooth and effortless BEFORE the 600-mile break-in service. AFTER the service? Even smoother, like butter.

Not sure if it was dumping the break-in oil... or new oil with Bel-Ray EXP.

Probably the dump, but will change with Mobil-1 Racing 4T at 2000-3000 miles and see how it feels.

How much did your dealer charge for break-in service if you don’t mind me asking? My local dealer says they need the bike for 3-4 days and won’t say how much…

They picked up the bike late Tuesday and delivered back to me the following Monday. Basically 3 days in shop.

Invoice was $343... but I negotiated "no charge" at time of purchase. They charge $115/hr. for shop labor.

First post here:  I'm checking out a 700 Sport at Rich's Yamaha in Lockport, IL this weekend.  Considering it as a replacement for my 2020 Svartpilen 401 that I've had for nearly 8000 great and problem free miles.

Initial quote without haggling was MSRP of $6999 plus $895 freight, and $495 setup, plus tax, title, registration, doc fees for about $9200 OTD.  Seems high, but we'll see if they'll be open to negotiating some things like free first service, trade in value, etc...

What dealer did you end up purchasing from?

Thanks!  I thought I spotted that on your keychain in one of the photos.  :)

I appreciate all the information you've added here in this forum to get things started, as it has been helpful to get an owner's perspective in addition to the other journalist reviews and videos. I'm aching for more power than my 401 provides these days, and itching for something new.  I want to get out to the Driftless Area in western WI and IL sometime later this year, and the Sport seems like a great bike to do it on.

Galena area is the most unglaciated in Illinois.

In Wisconsin, west of Janesville in the New Glarus/Argyle area is slightly unglaciated.

Directly west of Madison all the way over to Prairie du Chien and north to La Crosse is heavily unglaciated.

Did some turkey hunting in the Richland Center area some years ago. Those hills are like mini-mountains in the Midwest. Many of the roads run on top of the ridges, very scenic.
