Seems easy enough. But the manual says to look at the sight glass with the bike on the sidestand (after oil has settled). And the dealership that I bought it from obviously filled it with the bike upright. Also the few youtube videos I found also show it being checked upright. Kawasaki Versys manual also says "upright" and that is what the bike is a closest relative of if that matters.

Yeah I had this question as well. Manual says otherwise.

I contacted CFMoto USA and they sent me a PDF amendment to that page and it does indeed say to check with bike upright.
