z6 engine trouble
« on: September 17, 2015, 09:25:42 AM »
I am so glad someone finally started this forum. Thank you, Thank you Thank you

2012 z6, 220 miles on the clock. Engine cut off last time riding, and will not turn over now. No submersion in water, just trail mud/dirt.
Key on, motor off, the fuel pump does not sound like normal. really no sound at all. Red light on the dash blinks. I would think the starter would turn even if the fuel pump was bad, but I'm not 100% sure.  Direct wired starter to battery and the motor turns over just like normal. Replaced the engine cutout switch on the dash, but no change.
Any opinions or fixes would be greatly appreciated. Battery is good, and the starter relay under the drivers seat gets 12 volts in and out with the key turning.

Thanks
Jason

The blinking light is a trubble code. Download the manual to reference the code. It looks like you checked the relay but let's be sure it works. First check the trigger wire. 12v when you turn the key? Next, check to see if you get voltage across the terminals. Find a good ground, then probe the one side. Should be 12v. Then turn the key, should be 12v both sides. If it all checks out than look for bad connections. A little bit of crusty under  a lug will give you all sorts of problems.

Found out the damn fuel pump relay was  broken.  The terminal snapped off the connector. Still no cranking so focused on that now...

They looked like standard relays. Should be an easy fix. If you Google starter solenoid check, you will find good info on it. They use the cheaper solenoids and they never last that long.

Got the fuel pump relay fixed. Now the pump comes on, the light doesn't blink anymore on the dash.
Motor still will not turn, starter will not crank.  Cleaned the terminal at the starter, and still nothing.
Fuel pump will cycle for about 5-6 seconds once key is on then shuts off...
Wire is good from relay to starter terminal.
Is their another controller of the starter  motor that.I'm missing.
I downloaded the manual and it does help with some wire tracing, but nothing concrete  yet.  Do these have a tranny interlock switch somewhere??

I know if my z8 isn't in Neutral or Park, I have to press the brake to get it to crank. The kill-switch also has to be in the ON position.

Do you get 12v at the trigger wire to the solenoid when you turn the key. If you do, all the other switches/interlocks are fine and you need to look at the solenoid it's self. If you don't get 12v, we can start to look into why.

I'm having the same problem do you know which of the 4 wires in the harness is the trigger wire that should be getting 12 volts?

Check at the solenoid. There should only be one small wire and two large ones. The small one is the trigger. The larger one is from the battery cable pos and the other goes to the starter. Starter gets ground through it's case. If you get 12v at the trigger, and if your brave, bridge the two lugs on the solenoid with a screwdriver. This will make the starter go. If this works then replace the bad solenoid. If this does not work than try grounding the starter case with jumpers or the like. If still nothing, bad starter. This all should be done with a fully charged battery.
