Starting Issues
« on: November 07, 2017, 07:34:26 PM »
Let me start off by saying hello and I have gotten lots of information from here for my machine. But now I need some help.

I have a 2013 600ex. One day out of the blue it just decided it didn't want to crank. Just clicks from the starter solenoid when the key is turned. I pulled the starter off and it works fine. Jumped across the solenoid and it fired right up. Replaced the solenoid and still does the exact same thing. Has anyone else had this issue and can point me in the right direction before I start casing.

I just find it weird that the solenoid (Under the drivers seat) clicks as it should but doesn't function. And jumping the large terminals will fire it right up. Hopefully someone can help.
Thanks guys.

I've been through this. The battery is low or a bad cell. For some reason you can bridge the solenoid even when the battery is low and it will start. I now keep the switch on the dash turned off to prevent battery drain when parked. Try charging it up good and if that doesn't work you might just need a new battery.

I went through this just the other day. My battery when it gets low will do the same thing and if I put the jumper box on it will fire right up. Im gonna replace the battery since its 1.5 years old.

Thanks guys. I am not confident that will work as I have removed the battery and hooked up a good car battery  (with jumper cables straight to the positive/negative leads) and it still just get the same solenoid click, click, click.  That should take the battery out of the picture.
I don't mind getting a battery because I do feel like it's getting weak.

Got me stumped now. Could be a bad new solenoid. Bad grounding of the starter case, but starts when bridged. Bad voltage to the solenoid trigger wire, but it does click. Might want to get a multimeter and check it. If you hooked a good battery to it and it does the same thing, it probably isn't it. Just not sure if I have many more suggestions.

Then you must have an issue with the power to switch the solenoid, or you got a bad new solenoid out of the box.  Run a 12V jumper the the switched terminal on the solenoid and see if it will then crank. If it does, you have an issue in the ignition switch or wiring to it, if it does not, but still cranks when you jump the solenoid you could have a bad new solenoid as well.

My best guess would be ground wire corrosion. Remove and clean the contact points.

Turns out it was just the battery. I guess when I jumped a good battery to it the jumper cables were not making a good connection.

I still don't understand why the old battery would start when jumping across the solenoid but not with the key. But we are rolling again and I appreciate the help!!!

I didn't get it either when it happened to me. I figure that I can try bridging the solenoid if I get stranded with a low battery. Might just start.

I had starting issue this weekend a couple miles out in the woods. I had used the winch for about 10 seconds.... then she wouldn't start, crank until it hit the compression stroke then clicking. My friend went to get his jumper cables. after a couple tries before he got back it actually started. rode about 2 hours stopped at a friends and shut it off. Sat for about 45 minutes. Went to restart same thing. Hooked up jumper cables and started right up. I just ordered a new battery I think this one is on its last legs it is about 2 years old and sat in inventory for a year rarely getting used. I bought the one Chuddly did from amazon. Should be much better!

I found that these things just sitting use more power for the clock and other stuff then most others. After just three days of sitting it takes almost five hours on the tender to get the green light...after a week its all day. Mine goes on the tender every time I put it up now.

She was sitting for about a month untouched in sub 50 degrees (in the garage). She cranked slow when I first started her but later cracked fine after she ran for a little while. The battery might be able to be saved but honestly I'd rather have a better battery anyway and don't like jump starting it on the trail. I have to now get a decent set of cables and figure out where I'm gonna store then too
