Not going into 4x4
« on: January 28, 2017, 05:52:54 PM »
So I havent ridden my Z6EX at all, just moving it in and out of my shop and went to put it into 4wd the other day and when i pushed the button Im still only getting the 2wd symbol on the dash. I did it while stopped and then went forward slowly and it never came on. I know it WAS working as when I bought it, it was in 4x4 and locker was engaged and I had to switch it back to 2wd and it worked perfectly. The owners and service manual doesnt seem to give troubleshooting on 4x4 engagement. Anyone have any ideas? I was going to start with checking connections and fuses and make sure all is good.

Listen for the servo noise. No noise than might be electrical. If you hear it, than it might be the little gear "thingy" that moves it into 4wd. Pull the servo off a it's right there.

No servo noise. I replaced the switch after the initial post since I read about the issues with them and since it was cheap. No change. Still no light on dash and still no servo noise.

I assume you checked all the fuses and that you have power at the switch when the key is on and all is well, so that means actuator or actuator connection...in my book.

I have not checked power at the switch. I just replaced the switch last night and didnt have time to go through the manual and find a diagram to check the wiring yet. I visually looked at fuses but havent checked them with a multimeter yet(cant remember if i checked when i originally posted this). I didnt see one that looked like it had anything to do with the 4wd though.

May be on a relay that went bad or..check the speed sensor. It has been known to have problems and if it's out..the 4wd may not work. Is the speedometer working?

The speedometer is working. Thanks, Ill check the relay. IIRC the book does say which relay is which in order of how they are in line.

Check the wire loom going into the motor servo.
I have seen bad wires there cause the motor to lose power.
I believe was the white wire
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Finally had time and swapped the 2wd/4wd relay with the 4wd lockup relay and now it goes into 4wd. Instead of ordering a new cfmoto relay, Harley uses a mini relay exactly like this on the newer bikes so im just ordering some of the Standard brand replacement relays to replace all of them which should hold up alot better than the originals. Thanks for the help everyone.

The Harley part number is 31522-00 and the Tucker Rocky part number for the Standard brand replacement relay is 215228. If anyone wants one Ill sell them shipped USPS priority mail anywhere in USA. They are $10 for the first one and $7 a piece for everyone after the first as long as they are shipped all at once. There are 6 total relays on these. 4wd lockup relay, 2wd/4wd relay, brake relay, starter aux relay 2, oil pump relay, + starter aux relay 1.
