ecu replacement
« on: March 07, 2016, 09:57:55 AM »
I am thinking my ecu is bad does anyone know where to get one cheaper that alpha sports they want $385. Here is what I have done so far.

1. tested the battery it checks out fine
2. replaced the starter solenoid I'll keep the old one lol
3. Checked both starter relays under the dash replaced them with ones I knew to be good.
4. now it think its the ecu when you try to start it just clicks.

A bad ECU won't stop it from turning over but it will stop it from getting spark or fuel. A bad starter, bad power or ground, solenoid, starter drive gear...along with a locked-up engine will stop it from turning over. Can you manually turn the engine over..ie.. confirm it's not locked up?

First off thank you for your reply at first It acted like it was the starter solenoid that is located under the seat. So I replaced it but before and now if I jump across that solenoid it starts so I know its not locked up I wonder if I just got a bad solenoid or if that is even possible

Good, that is good to know its not locked... When you say you jump across the solenoid, are you jumping the battery cables or are you actually activating the solenoid by applying power from the battery cable to the 12V power wire on the solenoid? Cause I'm thinking the solenoid may have a bad ground or it's not getting the 12 volts from the switch...maybe a bad connection somewhere. Might test the power to the solenoid with the key in the starter position and see. Remove the wire first and connect the tester to it and ground before hitting the key.

Another thought...how about the neutral/Park switch! Have you tried it in all the gear selections? Is the Neutral light on in neutral? This is also a switch that does go bad sometimes.

I just seen this post. If you bridged the two post on the solenoid and it started and ran, I would say ECU just fine. You can get a bad brand new solenoid. Happens to me once in awhile.

I checked the service manual 11-4. That section is a horrible translation. Looks like there is a two terminal harness that plugs into the solenoid. I would think if you stick your meter leads in the harness and turn the key there should be 12v there. If not do as NMKawierider suggested and start checking interlock switches.

Sometimes you get so pissed that you just need to bring it in or set fire to it. I am interested in what the source of the problem was.

I made a video of what this thing is doing it acts just like a dead battery but the battery tests fine and has 12 volts. The solenoid is new I'm going to test a few things today with a multi meter and see what I can find out

If it starts by jumping the two battery cables, then the solenoid isn't able to mage full contact. It either had low power to it or a bad ground or its defective. Your multimeter will sort that out.

Here is the test for the 800. Probably the same for the 600.

11-29 in the service manual. Reds are from the battery. Y/R should be 12+ from the relay, the one you need. G is ground.

So I found the problem it was not the ecu it was not the solenoid or starter it was just a bad battery. A couple things will remain a mystery I guess.

1. why did the battery show 12 volts every time I checked it with my multimeter?
2. Why did it not start when I jumped it with a good battery?
3. Why did it start when I jumped across the solenoid?
4. Why did it not turn over slowly like other things I've had when the battery goes bad?

Does not make sense. A bad battery would not deliver power no mater what or how you jumped it. And although it may show 12 volts while sitting static, under load the voltage would not be 12, it would be far less. Now a bad connection or a bad battery cable or cable end..that may have a different outcome. Did any cable look or feel different then the other? Even the common.
