CVT Dust Filter
« on: August 26, 2015, 07:00:21 AM »
There was zero filtering of the CVT intake. I removed the duct and placed a Filterwears K157K prefilter on the end. I think this should solve my dust problem. I got the idea from Can-Am. They use the same material on their intakes.

What issues were you having? Have you ran it with this yet to see how it runs now?

That's a great idea and should work very well especially the "bag" style that won't plug easily and restrict flow. Will want to clear it once in a while though.

I was getting dust packed into the clutches. Machine was acting like the airfilter was clogged, gutless. These filters are water repellent and I should be able to brush or rinse it off where it sits. The  Can-Am I got the idea from was also out in that dust and I was able to wipe off the filter with my hand. I haven't taken it out yet but I can't think of any issues I will run into as long as I keep it cleared off.

What's the item number for this?  That's an awesome idea and I can't imagine it costing much.

Filterwears K157K. It was under $ 20. It is 5" dia. And 7" long. The z8 duct might be a different size but they have many sizes to choose from. Check their site.

I took apart the secondary today to make an adjustment. To my horror I found the cam was all chewed up. I think the dust did it in. Might have happened before I put the filter on.

Yeah that's pretty good wear already. Just polish it back up and put some graphite on them before assembly. I just cut a piece of my extra Unifilter material and fitted it dry begins the intake grill behind the driver's seat. The OE filter is also still in there. I just pop it out sometimes, give it a slap on a rock, stick it back in and off I go. Stays pretty clean in there. Still get some real fine stuff and belt dust but...

The scratches are deep. The buttons were worn bad so I ordered new ones with a new cam.  It was a lot of work to get it out so I'm not going to try to save it.
