Clutches packed with dust again
« on: July 27, 2015, 03:04:29 AM »
Went out this weekend. It was very dusty out. After having to service the clutch before for poor performance I knew right away what happened. One of my buddies rolled his new renagade . While I was trying to find out how the steering stem crushed the air box I did notice Can-Am uses a prefilter on their   CVT intake. Why couldn't I just use a airfilter prefilter with a  closed end over the end of mine.

No reason at all. I run a gauze filter over the intake of my C500 with no problems for the last two years.

If you decide to go ahead and put in your own pre-filter would you care to do a write up in the "How-To's" board?

Yes, please do a write up. As I recall our z8s have a fiber filter disk stuffed in the tube...not what I would call trustworthy in dusty situations.

I can take a picture or two. Since I will have it all apart, I'm going to try 23g rollers in the clutch. I ordered them but  I have to wait for them to make it here from Tiwan. I will document it all.

Were the clutches that dirty that it caused poor performance?  I've been riding in very dusty conditions lately.  Last time I checked the catch tube it was full of fine powder dust.  My assumption was that most dust got blown out the exhaust.  Heavier particles would settle in the catch tube.  I've put 1500 miles on my Polaris Sportsman in dusty conditions.  It has no filters or screens at all.  Every time I pulled the belt cover there was a dust coating on the clutches.  Never enough to suspect it would cause a problem.  My filter sponge on the Z caught a ton of dirt.  I didn't know it was their until my friend Arnie was poking around and found it.  This is on an 800.  Don't know if it applies to a 600.

The z6 has zero filtering. Polaris uses a different type of primary that handles dust better. Last time I was out in the dust, it was no time before the machine was falling on it's face. Acting like a severely clogged air filter.  When I opened the CVT, there was a ton of packed dust in there not letting the clutches move like they should.

Wow..well I am sure one can adapt some kind of prefilter material or the Z8's filter sponge to the Z6's intake. The other thing is that slow airflow through the CVT area can cause buildup. I wonder of they changed something on the fan blades between the two and if so, can an additional inline fan be added to increase flow rate. I do know my little spunge filter also stops a lot of Dust and dirt...but my Brute Force has nothing and it never has a problem.

Filterwear makes a waterproof prefilter. I have to get the thing apart and measure it then look to see what will fit best. I should be able to put it over the end and cable tie it.
