There is a lockout poker at the shifter side of the cable, remove the left side black engine panel, if you look you behind the shifter assembly you will see the cable that locks out the shift movement, release pressure on jam nut , then unscrew the cable and you will not need to step on the brake to shift. look up while epushing the brake and you will see the nut you are looking for , it's about 1/2 long.
