2015 x400s battery issue?
« on: March 04, 2017, 01:27:10 AM »
Hey guys owner of a 2015 x400s gotta say it hasn't been to bad as yet shifter was pretty stiff to start with and every now and then low gear will not engage at times pop out having these issues addressed with dealer, but now can't get it to crank over just "clicking" sound. Obviously I'm thinking battery issue even though every 2 weeks I fire it up and run it, well this time nothing but "clicking" tried jumping with leads same thing took the battery out charged over a trickle charger back in and "click click click" ????

Can it be anything else has anyone run into this issue...

Thanks Tez...

I'd say battery but need more info
first with battery in , add another power source and see if it will fire up?
If it won't fire, then try jumping the starter solenoid under the seat.
If it still won't fire then you may need a starter.
Going to be a process of elimination.

If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Yeah thanks wheels, did try to jump with the car battery still just clicks, then thought maybe leads issue also did try to starter still just clicks, then charged still just clicks the thought of the starter did pass my mind then just doubted and thought "really starter just like that hmmm" so put the battery back on charge again to see what happens as when tested the voltage came up as 12.6V thought maybe a bit low not sure whether I should buy a new battery or just tow it in to the dealer now???

What do you think?

Update...

Did a few more checks seems like the more you look at these machines the more you find, charged the battery again according to the odometer volt reading was 13.1v plenty you would think to fire up the quad? Again nothing but clicking but noticed the clicking sound coming from the solenoid under the seat? Tried the lights and winch that just quickly drained the battery once again! Don't know what made me take off the air box cover but what the heck and found fluid in the bottom thought maybe water but was oil? So drained that from the bottom? Now just left scratching my head is it battery? Solenoid? Or what? With oil getting into airbox too...

Only got about 50km on the clock... :o

Thinking putting up another post numbering the things I've found so far... :-X

You have a older model x5, that will need the crank breaker update kit, this is free warranty kit. It will take care of the oil in the airbox. New one have this done from factory.
I'm guessing your starter relay is toast. Did you jump it? Use a wrench to touch between both large red wires?
The update kit is easy enough to install but I think in  the land down under. They want to dealers to do it. Solenoid is a very easy change.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Thanks Wheels.

So I bridge between the 2 big red cables on the solenoid using a spanner whist hitting the starter button correct?

Clean and check all battery cable connections first. Don't assume they are all OK, take them off and inspect & clean the contact surfaces on all of them..all the way to the starter. Then look to the battery and/or solenoid.

Just turn key on and bridge the solenoid. No need to push starter button.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

When you jump the solenoid remember it will bark and hiss at you. You just need to turn key on then bridge the two large red wires. Quickly, no need to keep is spinning. We are just looking to see if the solenoid is part of the problem. Try with battery first, and also with backup battery hooked up.. Remember that just because a battery shows 13v or so doen't mean it's good. Can have enough to turn the lights on, but not enough amps to spin it over.
If it has Pistons or Tits you will encounter problems.

Thanks wheels,

You were absolutely right, so I recharged the battery over night on the trickle charger put it back in showed up again at 13.1v,tried to bridge across the solenoid that quickly drained the battery and the odometer went out, hooked up the secondary battery off the car using leads bridged again and bingo fired up, seems to me the battery is definetly gone and might also need the replacement solenoid, idling now alittle Rough and also the screen on the odometer is going wild switching around and the settling on the battery voltage display going nuts eventually just shut down on its own...

Not sure what's happening but I'm gathering it's all to do with the weak ass battery now.

So ordered a new battery and will go from there..

Keep you posted..

Hey all, hooked the leads up again tried the starter button again nothing but clicks!

Bridged across the solenoid again and fired straight up left the leads on from the car and she's idling fine and the odometer is normal.

Conclusion battery stuffed and along with the solenoid going to the dealers now to deal with this issue and the rest.

Thanks all for your help this forum is such a relief and it's great to be apart of the cfmoto family here...

But for the life of me can't understand as to why all this has happened she's always kept out of the weather in the garage well looked after and constantly run still fairly new with only 140kms on the clock...

Will make another post listing the dramas I've faced with the machine would love to hear all your advise thanks again guys...

Hmmm just thinking could the starter solenoid short/problem drained the battery to the point of no return.

Can definetly smell a battery acid scent now coming from the battery in the process of all this fault finding mission...
