Oil pressure light flashes when first starting?
« on: September 03, 2020, 11:37:59 PM »
Hey guys.. so my machine has a new quirk. The oil pressure light will flash a couple times when first starting. It never did this until after it was in for a warranty issue and the transmission was rebuilt. It only comes on for a few seconds but has me a bit concerned. Is this normal or is something on it's way out?

That's pretty typical for most any 4 stroke motor. It takes a few moments for the pump to pressurize the system.

I kind of figured that but am more mystified at how it's something new, and didn't do this from day 1.
I guess as long as the light goes out before the engine is under any load it shouldn't be anything to be concerned about...?

It's typical for a second or two on even new bikes. Always has been.

Why it didn't on yours is the mystery ;-)

Now it's just back to normal.

The light is on when you turn the key before the engine even turns over.  If it's not, then I wonder if the pressure switch was clogged.

Switch is closed as long as it's under 10psi or so. Most that that I ever had dealings with would pressure-up past that just with he starter well below normal idle RPMs. Even my oil pressure light goes out before it actually starts. Some work differently but if it were mine...and my oil pressure light was on while running...even at idle...even for a second...I would test the pressure and if it was OK, then it would get a new switch. That's just me.

The 800XC has a beep tone whenever the oil pressure is low. They all beep for a second or two after starting waiting for the pressure to come up. It's normal, but unsettling for those not accustomed to it.

Without the beep, most folks aren't looking for the light when starting and never notice. If the light goes out inside of 2 seconds (1 is even better) of starting, the engine is fine.

I'm just being paranoid, right?

Just weird it didn't do this from day 1...

Yeah that's more of a signal from the ECU. I almost bet if you traced the the power or ground for the low oil pressure light on the new ones one would lead to the ECU...unlike the pre-2018s
