I am so pissed off right now I could choke the first person from CF Moto I see.

With just a a little over 600km on this machine, I figured it was time for an oil change, so I made the effort to stop in at my dealer to stock up on a few oil filters. I got home and read the printed manual that came with my machine and proceeded with warming up the engine and draining what I thought was the oil. It clearly states in the manual, which drain plug to remove. My suspicions were tingling when only less than a litre of oil drained out, plus, it didn't smell like typical motor oil, so I revisited the manual. I concluded that I was on the right path, so I removed the cover for the oil filter and changed it with a new one. The oil that drained out, certainly looked and smelled like engine oil, so I continued. I went to my local auto parts store to buy some 15W40 oil and poured in the first litre. No problem. I started pouring in the second litre and the flow stopped. What the hell   You have got to be kidding me........... the idiots who wrote the manual have me filling up the transmission with engine oil. Upon closer inspection, there is a drain plug on the bottom of the crankcase. NOWHERE in the manual does it say anything about this plug, nor does it show the fill tube towards the rear of the engine. Soooooo..... now I have a transmission filled to the top with engine oil. Needless to say, I drained the engine oil and now have to drain the transmission. Upon closer inspection, there is a removable access panel under the engine to make the job easier. Again, nowhere in the manual is this shown. To make matters even worse, two of the four retaining bolts were loose. You could remove them by hand. Am I surprised? Not at all. I have lost count of the defects I have found since purchasing this piece of crap. If anyone, like myself, is coming from a Can-am or Polaris and looking at one of these machines, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Now that I have the problem sorted out, I have found the online manual which certainly has more accurate information. The contradiction within these manuals is downright absurd. They print three different pieces of info as to when the first oil change is to be done. This just blows my mind how things like this are not corrected. If anyone would like to see a photo of the manual which clearly gives the wrong info, I can provide that.

What a f_cking waste of time and money. Now I have to go back and buy another couple of litre of engine oil, as well as gear oil. CF Moto should be made aware of this, but I don't even know who/where to contact them. I hope this makes other people aware to not reply on the printed manual, and make the same mistake I did.

I wasn't aware the basic engine case had changed to have the transmission separate from the engine as they were a shared sump system in the 800s..with just the one drain plug under that removable cover. I suspect the drain got removed on the rear diff or gear case which had grear lube in it..very different smell. Please do post a pic of the manual page that is in error. You can also contact CFM directly through their web sites. There is also a free service manual posted here in our 1000 section...as is with most of the rest.

Yes the Z1000 has separate transmission oil which is quite obvious by a separate dipstick which is quite large BTW

Oh..I see..They still use the same location for the trans drain as the 800s used for the shared system drain but put the engine fill,drain and dip stick on the other side. Well, the trans drain is IMO clearly marked for the 1000 as well as the engine oil drain for the 800s in the manual though.

Oh well Redfire427, probably needed to change the trans oil anyway...and it says you can use either type. I think I would stick with gear oil though

So..it looks like they just modified an 800's owner's manual. Someone should be on the hook for that mistake. The other owner's manual we pulled off their site which has all the Zs in it is correct. I would toss that one and download ours.

I never suggested your an "idiot" nor do I think my comment is stupid.

Skilled people in any trade do not accept written words should it be on the internet, books or whatever as gospel. When the warning signs something is not right you follow that.

I won't make any excuse for anything CFMOTO publishes right or wrong, it is something that goes with the price you pay. Your comment about BRP & Polaris simply reflects they have accepted the skill set of who is working on the product & make sure it is stupid proof.

CFmoto has been known to have a hard time translating things into English and making manuals correctly. If you need to get more oil I would also suggest you don't run 15w-40 I would used a 5w-40 or 10w-40 15w is too thick on a cold start, no need for it. This has even been stated to me on a phone call with a cfmoto field engineer I guess you would call him. Basically the answer guy dealers call when they run into problems at cfmoto usa.

I have an early '60's Honda 125-150 twins manual and you should read the Engrish in that one!

Posts like this are a great "Heads-Up" for anyone new to the machines.
I will definitely be more vigilant when I start doing service on this thing!
