Bent spring
« on: March 28, 2020, 06:59:14 PM »
Hi there,

Last week I had my gearbox replaced (the well known problem of Z1000 with grinding gears).
When I took the machine back, after a brief, visual inspection I've noticed that the front, right spring is bent. Not so much to touch the shock but it's visible.

I don't know what could cause that (I probably hit a rock or a root) but I did't noticed any change in handling so I was not aware of this problem prior sending the machine to the dealer. Normally, I didn't tell them to investigate.
Due to the quarantine restrictions, I will not be able to send it back anytime soon.
Upper and lower arms look ok, no signs of any impact.

Any idea which the solution is? I'll post tomorrow some pictures.

Yeah rotate the spring and see if it changes...look for a bent shaft. It's very hard to bend one of those springs but not so hard to bend the shaft. It may also be out of place or has a rock in a coil...so give it a close look.

Cannot upload the pictures. I'll try later.

I didn't do anything yet because I wanted to get some ideas in the first place (I don't want to mess something there).
I've tried to rotate the spring but it rotates together with the shock. I guess I have to pull out the tire and try again (when the upper arm is a bit loose).

I'm not a technical type so I apologise for awkward explanations.

This is my bent spring.

L.E I don't know why the picture is rotated. I took it in portrait mode.

Impossible for it to be a bent spring like that. Have you adjusted the shocks recently. It looks more like it is twisted or torqued.

The only operation I've made on the machine since I purchase it (besides the oil and filter changes - which was made by the dealer's mechanics) was changing the wheels (tires and rims). But this operation is a common one and I've done several times with absolutely no problem (this time was no exception).
No shock or spring adjustment (I didn't feel the need).

For me one thing comes to mind and that is if the shock shaft isn't bent and there has been no external forces at work, then it could be some of that fine Chinese metallurgy...as in poor tempering. We all know how their single dual-rate springs all collapsed only on the lighter rated parts. Maybe..somehow when they were tempering these side was left slightly softer then the other and collapsed. Just a thought....I know..not likely but not the strangest things we've seen with these. I do also know that there are no issues with Bandit's springs so..

The shock looks good though, so I guess I'll change the spring.
Should I change both front springs? Any potential issue with a new spring only on the right side? I mean stability and/or handling issues...

I kinda like PonyTail's observation. I can envision the end of the shock getting caught on the collar gap, and the collar getting moved as the nut turns to increase the preload. Perhaps a long shot but  ...

It would not hurt to release the spring tension, even a little, to see if it straightens out. If it does, give the collar and nut a squirt of wd40 and re-tighten making sure the collar and spring don't move as the nut spins. If it doesn't straighten, then either the spring or the shaft is bent.

I'll try to release the spring .. before purchasing a new one.
Maybe I'm lucky.

I had a spring just like that on a Suzuki shock. An aftermarket HighLifter spring. It actually did touch a plastic inner sleeve.
I think it was the metallurgy of the manufacture, unequal hardening.
You can't make a spring that's mounted on a shock sweep like that as a result of it being hit.
I'd say like NMK said try turning it, take the weight off the wheels on that end with a jack so it turns easily. And if it's not touching the inner reservoir, just run it. Who sees? :)
