Air filter pre filter?
« on: February 25, 2020, 08:19:25 PM »
Hey guys, so I take delivery of my 2018 Zforce 1000 tomorrow that was a demo and has 100kms on it.

I have my Unifilter NU-8503-ST ready to oil and install as soon as I get the machine and I was wondering if it's worth while to use a pre-filter as well?

I was also wondering what you guys recommend for engine oil? Do you guys run synthetic and if so, do you extend the oil change interval? I was under the impression the 1000s use a dry clutch system and the 800s use a wet clutch, so I'm a bit confused by the service manual on page 10 under Zforce 1000 specs:

"SAE15W-40/SG – JASO certified for wet clutch  (10W-40 acceptable alternative/cold weather)"

I have a bit of mechanical experience having rebuilt dirt bikes in the past, as well as  installing lifts on Jeeps and tinkering, so I'm fairly comfortable doing my own maintenance once I learn the machine.

Any other tips or tweaks or things I should check on the machine once I have it in the garage?

Thanks

Congrats on the new machine. I wouldn't worry about a prefilter. If they still use the prefilter bag over the inlet tube that's behind that grill between the seats, that's something you want to clear often as it is a prefilter material and will block-up. The oil..well that's just the standard oil they use in all. JASO is in most all motorcycle engine oils so don't worry about that either. Yes, most of us use synthetics after they are broke in well. I still only go 700-800 miles between changes. I could go longer but the last one was two years ago and the oil just now got enough color that I didn't have to bring it completely to me to see the level. Still very clear though. I use Castrol Power RS or Power 1 10W40. And yes, you do have a dry clutch system. However your transmission is now seperate from the engine oil and they do yse gear lube in them...also the 2018s had a transmission issue...not all of them...but make sure your dealer knows that you know about it. Other then making sure all the bolts are all torqued to spec and cotter pins in place, have fun and be safe. I hear the 1000s are a lot of fun. :)

JMO. I use a prefilter on the intake tube and the air filter. I’ve done a little testing on the prefilters. You would be amazed at how much dirt they catch. The stock one is junk. I put a outerwear on the intake tube, and the stock one over that. The amount of dust that gets past the stock one is stupid. I was never a believer in prefilters until now. So to sum it up... two on the intake and one on the uni. With the design of the intake every little bit helps. Thoughts.

I was a believer of one on the filter until one day I was out on a dusty run and started to loose power. It would run fine up to about 2700RPM then it was like it was starving for air. Got home, pulled the airbox cover and found that my outerwears prefilter had got coated with the filter oil and became...well.. a very good filter...by stopping everything from getting to the Unifilter. And the more it got plugged, the more it got sucked into and against the foam...and the more oil it got. It was just a solid cake of oily dust all the way around. The Uni...was still pretty clean. Then I saw some flow tests that showed they can be restrictive even clean so I decided not to use them any more...except for my little bonnet prefilters I put over my stack intakes on real dusty trips. Looking for some black ones but these do work...a little.

I use bulk furnace filter material wrapped around my pre-wrap unifilter.Works great as it catches much fine dust, after all, thats what furnace filters do.
