28x10x14 tires on Z1000
« on: November 08, 2019, 07:17:54 AM »
Currently I have ITP Ultracross on my Z1000. They are 28x10x14 and, according to the official website, the diameter of the mounted tire is 28.2 inches. The tire is on the limit but it's ok.

I need a set of tires which can handle the snow (winter is coming and here, in Romanian's mountain we have no less than 10-15 inches of snow for 4-5 months).

After a brief research I'm ready to press the button for ITP Blackwater Evolution (same size) but the problem is that the same official website tells me that the diameter of the mounted BW EV is 28.5 (0.3 inched in addition).

Did anybody has ITP Blackwater Ev mounted? If so, is there enough room?

Thanks a lot

3-tenths of an inch is 7.62mm. Divided in half is 3.81mm. Can't imagine how that can be of concern...especially when people are running 29s and 30s with no lifts or anything else on the EX  and 1000s.

When somebody is right than he's right.

I was concerned about the mud which eventually sticks on tires and about those huge knobs of BWE.
But I'll give it a try.

Thanks a lot for clearing the issue

Are you sure those BWEs are good in the snow? I know they are OK in slop and mud...and other things but snow is a different thing.

I've red some reviews and it's seems they perform well in snow. Fast shed, big lugs...
Do you have any info first hand about these tires?
Here we have mostly wet snow, not powder, so I need a tire which can dig and provide traction. And I have to ride sa few miles on pavement to reach the mountain trails. I don't think V shape would work.

Besides, there are not so many options for this size on the market (at least here in Romania). My short list was this:
CST Behemoth, Blackwater Evolution and Kenda Mastodon AT. I was able to find only the first two.

No first hand experience. People that have them tend to like them though.

I'm sure somewhere someone posted photo's of 15's on Z1000, I remember thinking probably because the poster did it going to a automotive tire what a awesome idea. Goodrich TA's is what I remember on the unit, not as a snow tire.

I've "not" explored it, this sounds like a perfect application for some real snow tires.

Just sayin  :)

Regular car tires perform well on roads covered with snow (in part due to the rubber type) but I don't think they will handle 15-20 in of snow.

Besides that, they would be much more heavier and, with all due respect :), I don't think Z1000 would handle this extra weight without changing all joints and axles with performance ones. This means a lot of money (just a pair of Damon performance axles is around $400)..

I just want a set of SxS tires which can perform acceptable in heavy snow with the stock setup of the machine.
I ordered the BWEs and let you know how they perform on snowy trails.
