2018 ZForce 1000 clutch drags
« on: April 04, 2020, 01:12:53 PM »
Hey guys, I've looked at the manual and searched the web and can't figure this out.
I've got a 2018 1000 that I brought to the dealer back when it was new for a clutch "recall". They told me my clutch needed a spacer installed that fixed some sort of a problem. I wasn't really having any problems with my clutch at the time, the usual "clunk" if you hit the gas too hard, but it was fine.
Lately I've been having issues changing gears because the clutch is dragging; I also get a burning rubber smell too.
I've looked inside once before and noticed a lot of dust, after blowing it out everything is great...for awhile.
I'm back into it and there's more dust.
Most people would say "hey, bring it back to your dealer", but I have NO confidence in them, I've got stories and I'd rather not get into it.

Anyway, the manual shows something different to what I see, the bolt, nut and washer arrangement seems wrong, can someone who been inside their 1000 comment on this photo? any help with this problem would be appreciated! Thanks.
Tom

I personally have not seen one up close but I always thought that the bolt was torqued against the retainer nut to keep it in place...and if so...Just guessing...I don't think I would see a gap or space between the two. Again I have not seen one up close and my thinking may well be off-base. One think I do know is there has been a lot of idler bearing failures. That's the bearing that the belt rides against when just sitting there. When they start to seize, they don't turn easily and they start spinning on the bottom of the belt..which then starts burning spots in it..and thus the smell. If you pull the cover and inspect the very bottom side of the belt all the way around you should see signs of this every so often if this is the case.

I checked with a feeler gauge and it looks like there's a washer between the bolt head and nut, also between the nut and the clutch face, you can't see them because their OD is less than the OD of the nut and bolt. I hesitate to run that bolt out because I don't have the tool to lock the clutch basket.
I can feel the bearing spinning freely and I don't see any wear in any one spot on the belt.

I've seen youtube videos of people using an impact to remove that bolt, but I see a mention in the manual not to use an impact?

When I did my clutch nut recall myself there was no washer between the bolt and nut and when I got the new nut it was not gold in color and I may not be remembering it right but the new nut was thinner. I posted a while back about the recall.

Theplowman88,
Here's an up close photo of the bolt and nut combo, I'm not sure what I'm looking at, maybe no washer under the nut?

Do you have any trouble with your belt dragging or lots of dust under the clutch cover?

Something just doesn't look right. And why are all the corners rounded-off that bolt? Looks like the shop mechanic used the wrong size socket on it...on both for that matter. I'd get the puller and pull all that off for a complete inspection and re-install.

I have no problems with mine dragging and there was not much dust when I was in there. But I do agree with NMK something doesn’t look right. You will need to buy cvt’s clutch tool to remove the bolt and nut.

You can remove that bolt and nut withopout the specific tool. if you use an air or electric nut remover (don't know the corrct word for it but those who knocks and screw). Don't think the dealers use that tool every thime they take an clutch apart. just make sure you don't over torque it when you put i back together.

Does the belt alignment lock good ?

is the one way bearing mounted the rigt way or does it engage at the wrong direction?

Thanks for the link to the tool.

I'll check to see if the one way bearing is installed correctly.

Can anyone verify if that's the right nut shown in the picture? I'm wondering if my dealer did this right.
The dealer told me there was a recall and that nut needed to be replaced with one with the right thickness?

As for using an impact to remove the clutch, I think the manual warns against this, I could be wrong, I'm going to buy the tool anyway.

The ONE thing I regret in buying this machine is that it's tough to get critical details when something's not right.
I don't trust my dealer and I feel like I'm on my own.

Thanks for your help with this.
