2018 z force 1000 Fan temp switch
« on: June 07, 2019, 07:50:21 AM »
Does anyone know where the thermal switch for the fan is located on the 2018 z force 1000 ? It’s not in the radiator like I’m used to seeing.

The manual is a wonderful place to get info. For example a quick look at the cooling section showed this diagram that shows they no longer use a thermoswitch to trigger the fan relay. The ECU uses the readings from the temp sensor to trigger the relay directly. So..no thermoswitch to worry about anymore. Smart move CFM.

Thanks NM, have now downloaded the service manual and am trying to find the location of the " temp sensor ". I have been let down in the woods before due to overheating and am trying to be proactive with this new machine.

It should be on the front cylinder with the thermostat.

Hey Buzzard, my 1000 ran hot on me as well. It was because the fan wasn't coming on and it turned out to be the fan itself. I to was looking for a thermo switch when I learned that my 1000 didn't have one. So definitely check the fan itself and make sure it comes on when you put 12 volts to it.

There's also a fan fuse in the fuse box. Mine blew on me when it was new so check that as well.

I blew the fan fuse on mine when it was about a month old too but I changed it and haven't had a problem since.

I must retract this statement.  Yesterday while out for a drive my wife noticed the temp climbed up to 5 bars and the malfunction light started flashing.  This was after a while of low speed crawling through rough terrain in 4Low.  Stopped on the trail and took apart the storage box expecting to have a blown fan fuse again, but it was fine.  Turned out to be the fan relay itself.  I swapped it with the high and low headlight relays to confirm, and ended up using the high beam relay in the fan slot to get us going.  I'm curious as to what could be causing these fuses and relays to blow?  I wasn't in any deep water or anything.

There are only two main reasons these parts can have issues-one...and it is well known..they are very low quality. And two- the load is actually higher then designed for. If the fan motor is pulling over the system's limit, it will cause fuse-blowings and relays to overheat and fail. I found having a DC clamp-on amp probe well worth the cost. It had told me so many things about my CFM...some I didn't want to know...lol. I bought this one but there are cheaper ones out there.

Clamp on DC current meter's are awesome tools, quick check of charging & starter current...easy to see a starter going bad....or a fan as in this case  :)

I have two, one for Hi current then a small version clamp on that will measure 10-20ma accurately. I'm chasing a battery drain right now & the small clamp on lets me measure very low current without having to disconnect the battery.

Thanks for the great idea about swapping the relays, will keep that in the ole noggin for sure.I'm guessing the amp ratings are close. Yes I've got a clamp on amp meter too and am seeing here how invaluable it is here. Part of my on-board tool kit from now on !
