Brakes locking up on Uforce 800
« on: May 06, 2016, 07:25:35 PM »
The brakes on my 2015 UForce 800 lock up as soon as I press on the pedal and don't release for 10 minutes or so.
Does anyone want to take a guess on the cause of the problem and the fix.
I checked it out today. It was acting normal until I hit the brakes, then I could feel the brakes dragging

Master cylinder not releasing far enough to let the pressure back..ie.. rod adjusted too tight? Binding calipers? Is it both front and back?

I know for sure that the front brakes are both locking up. I think the back ones are too, but its harder to tell on them. I'm guessing that its unlikely that multiple calipers would lock up on an almost new machine. Don't you think?  My local Honda shop and one not local says they can't get to my Moto until the last of may. Do you think there is something I can do to make it work?
Thanks a bunch for responding. I really appreciate your input.

May be the master cylinder. When you hit the brakes, how much does it push down before you feel resistance? If less then 3/4" it may be adjusted too tight. Have you tried lifting the peddle up to see if it releases? Does the peddle spring back to the top all by itself or does it need help?

You can jack it off the ground while you look through it. See if it is all of them dragging or just fronts ect. This will lead you to the source of the problem or at least get info for us to help you. YOU CAN DO THIS. If you want to.

I had an AHA moment today while working with the Moto. I made sure not to touch the break pedal while I drove it a short distance. I left the engine running and walk behind the unit to put some flower pots in the back. While I was standing there , the brake lights flickered and then came on steady. I had my wife watch the brake lights while I pulled the pedal up with my toe.  The break lights went out. I checked the travel as best I could on the travel at the pedal before I felt pressure. There was hardly any. It looked like there is an adjustment on the pedal push rod. I will adjust it tomorrow and use your recommendation of 3/4 inch of free travel. I'm betting that will fix the problem.
If it doesn't, I have a lift that I can use to check all the wheels to see which ones are free wheeling.
Thanks again folks for your help. I'll advise after I make some adjustments.

I adjusted the push rod at the pedal. I shot for about 3/4 inch but probably ended up with a little more. It looks like the problem is fixed, on the only test ride I got in before other priorities took over.  I plan on riding it again tomorrow to see if its working ok. I'm still keeping my date with the dealer though. I don't know how long it's been dragging and how much damage it's done to the pads and rotors. Thanks again for the inputs.

Mine had the same problem from the day I took delivery. New master cylinder solved the problem.

Yesterday, I left my beastie girl with the Honda dealer for a look at the problem. I thought sure I'd be sent packin' when I told them I may have fixed it, but they took in the story, assured me they'd take a hard look at the breaking gear and sent me on my way happy. I let you know what happens.

New info from the Honda Service Center: In addition to the corrections I made, they found that the emergency brake cables were not adjusted right. They adjusted it and readjusted the push rod connection to the pedal and master cylinder. I pick it up tomorrow. Thank you Moto for providing the warranty. On the other hand, it would have been better for everyone if the problem hadn't been built in. Let's hope it's CASE CLOSED, King.

I noticed on mine when I was bleeding the brakes that the master's cups don't open up to the reservoirs for discharge or replenishment until the last like 1-2mms of travel. That means if for some reason the rod doesn't or can't come all the way back to the stop, there will be an issue.  I have some play in the peddle but most of it is just loose or sloppy pivots and pins.
