Additional or Pre-Filter for the Z8

All these issues regarding air filtration destroying engines has prompted me to modify my cold air intake system to accept an additional foam filter. I chose a high-flow mushroom-type used on many V-6 because of the size and where I wanted to use it.

NOTE: This Mod and location is not recommended for anyone that will be in situations that fill or cover the bed in MUD and/or WATER!




One mod was done right away because the nut that held it together was not fixed to the inside and for my needs it needed to be, I epoxied it to the frame inside. DO THIS FIRST!



And being a foam type that could use the same foam filter oil treatment as the Uni or TwinAir would give me an excellent additional layer of protection. Some places we ride have fine talc which can get through the best of filters. I have also ordered a Twin Air unit for the airbox as well.
This new filter uses a 3” flange so it was necessary to open the intake at the top of the pipe to 3” from its OE of  about 2”. The ol’ hole saw did the trick.



I then needed some 3” OD tubing to go between the two and Midas Muffler turned me on to a nice 18” piece of scrap they had.  Thanks Midas! Cut it to length and so that I would have two tabs on the end to anchor it to the intake pipe.



Installed the pipe to the intake and custom ground to fit the contours.



Once all the inside edges were beveled for smooth air flow, I fitted it and positioned it in the hole…which by the way has to be ground out to 3.25”, I drilled and installed the set screws to the tabs.







Then it was sealed to the intake pipe with JB Weld as it would bond to both plastic and steel. Of course it was wiped-down with acetone first.



Now because of the depth and how tight the 3” pipe fit in the rubber flange of the air filter it needed to be opened up a bit. An air grinder with a long flat sided stone did the trick.



Then it was just a matter of lubing the two with silicone grease and assembling and tightening the clamps.



Also treated the filter with some NoToil foam filter treatment and installed it.



Now all I have to do is spin that nut you see off to clean and service that filter. The one in the airbox should stay very clean for a very long time and I won’t have to get in there after every ride.
I have also special ordered two water resistant black prefilter covers from outerwears. These will slip over the mushroom filter like a shower cap and keep the filter pretty dry and act as yet another layer of protection.
Kind of a lot of trouble to go through but if it will help keep this engine safe, for me it’s worth it.

IF you live or ride in extremely wet or muddy conditions, this may not be the best mod for you.

UPDATE 10/15/16:

Well just got back from a long and very dusty ride and the mushroom filter charged with No-toil oil was well covered with dirt and dust. It never even got close to choking-down and when I pulled it off, no sign of anything getting through. Everything from the inside of the foam as far as I can see and swab with a long cotton swab was completely dust free. So, I can assume (because I have not yet opened the air box) the new TwinAir I just installed looks as good as I just put in too. This is going to make it so much easier to keep clean air flowing then expected. I expected at least some to get through but that wasn't the case.  I also see I can buy a sheet of UniFilter foam material which is a much better quality material then what comes with this filter. I may just buy some and custom-cut it to fit just for my own satisfaction/ piece of mind.

UPDATE 10/16/15:

OK, the Outerwears 2qt funnel pre-filter fits like a glove. Perfect. Wish it came in black...but red is the only color I could find. Now when the Unifilter sheet gets here I'll cut and install it replacing the course purple foam with a fine green foam. That wrapped with a waterproof/resistant pre-filter, all before the two-stage TwinAir filter in the box. I DARE any BS get to my engine through the intake now...lol

During the course of time I have tried several filter types in this unit starting with the original Purple material which is about 20 PPI, very course but it let some partials by so I tried the Unifilter Green Fine which is a single layer 65PPI material but that ended up being very restrictive so I then wend with the standard Unifilter Red/Yellow which is a 40/60PPI material. This seemed fine until the other day when I was testing a new clutch setting I noticed I couldn't reach the rev limiter. It was then I noticed sitting in the shop that at about 5600RPM the prefilter I am using was being sucked hard against the filter surface. Well, this meant restriction obviously and a reason for the power fall-off at higher RPMs. So off it came and I will use it on rainy rides. I also noticed that it may also be possible for the red/yellow material to become restrictive especially when it gets a little dirty. I was going to change to a complete new filter but decided instead to go to the single layer Unifilter Red material which is 40PPI. This is way better then the Purple material yet should allow better breathing then the dual-stage material...all the time. It may mean I will have to clean the TwinAir in the box once in a while...like once every six cleaning of the mushroom filter.. but..that's OK.

So for you folks that have done this mod, know that the prefilter can get pulled down to the surface and if you are using something other then the OE filter material, this is what I am trying next:

UPDATE 9/9/16

New filter material installed. It is a bit thinner then the Purple but fits fine. Also found that although the prefilter didn't look all that dirty, it was in fact VERY dirty which may account for the problems getting air through it. I guess you have to actually clean then with soap and water sometimes....lol

I like your work. That is a good idea that should work well. The only problem I see is, you're cutting down your air flow, which will cut your power down.

How am I cutting down the airflow? I have increased the opening on the intake pipe from 2" to 3" and placed a filter used on V-6 engines on a little V-twin. That should have no resistance and it's still getting the coolest air possible. I guess when it started to get dirty it will offer some resistance but it will get cleaned long before that. Of course the OE filter is still in the box and I am pretty sure that still offers some flow resistance too but keeping it clean longer should help keep it optimized.

Twin Air makes a great filter.  My KTM race bike came with a Twin Air from the factory.

I believe the Uforce uses the same filter as the zforce. If that's the case then yes it will work

I got a question for you guys. I installed my new TwinAir last night and although I trust TwinAir and UniFilter completely, I was a little concerned that the TwinAir doesn't have any cage or inside structure to keep it from collapsing when it starts getting dirty and restrictive. It take no pressure at all to squeeze it shut.

So, my question is for you guys with Unifilters. Is yours the same way?

My Uni Filter has a coil spring inside to prevent it from collapsing.  That being said I've seen many foam filters (Twin Air included) being run dirty with no cage.  I have never seen or heard of a filter collapsing.  I suppose its possible if you ran in extreme dirt, mud, and dust for several months without cleaning it.  Its just not likely.  I think you would experience hard starting or a check engine light for rich mixture before you collapsed a filter.  Just my 2 cents.

The TwinAir CFMoto sent us has a spring, how ever that same part number I ordered from one of out suppliers did not come with the spring. I was told by CFMoto to call TwinAir and they will send a spring for it.

My uni filter DOES have a spring, but I'm liking the twin better because of the surface area and the predicted you can buy for it
