Secondary Clutch Removel Question
« on: August 23, 2015, 12:27:20 PM »
Any of you guys have a Bi*ch of a time getting your driven/secondary nut off? It's supposed to be torqued to about 85ftlbs but because of room, I am using my torque wrench to remove with a home made spanner wrench, not my air impact and I have set it to now 140ftlbs and it still needs more. Yes, I am going the right way...lol  The primary, which has the same torque, popped with about 95 as expected.

Update: I am now at 220ftlbs torque trying to break it loose and even tried heating the nut thinking they use some threadloc and still it won't let go. I'm about at the physical limits of my homemade spanner wrench..and the ribs on the clutch too. Unbelievable. WTF were they thinking at the factory.

I have no idea why you are having such a problem. Is there any way to remove what's in your way to use the impact? I can't give any good tips on this one.

I did try my 1/2" drive air impact but with an extension  to get by stuff with no luck. Even without one I think 220+ftlbs is more then it can do. I'm headed to Harbor freight in the morning to get the longest breaker bar they have. I just don't know if my spanner and the clutch's ribs can take much more. We'll see I guess.

HF has an 1/2" impact that puts out alot of force. I think it's their earthquake brand. I have yet to have anything not come off with that thing. You do have to use a large compressor, shortest hose you got and run it wide open. might try heating the inside of the nut with heat incase they used loc-tight. heat till you smell burning loc-tight then get after it.

I did heat it but not to the point that I smelled anything burning. I'll go farther next time. I though I read in the manual that they use a Loctite..but damn!

I think I give up. Bought a 25" breaker bar, heated the nut to the point it changed color, added a 3' extension pipe to the breaker bar and jumped on it...nothing. Cranked the air compressor to max pressure (175) and bought an actual impact extension for the impact, reheated the nut to as hot as I can get it...nothing.

loc-tight will hold until you hit the 600f mark. What is the rating in ft/lbs of your impact. I read some where that for every inch of extension you loose 70ft/lbs at the nut. I have tried other impacts before and failed to get stuff to budge. New one has yet to meet it's match.

Oh hell my air impact is only good to 350f...and I was using a 6" impact extension...I didn't have a prayer. And I know I was at or over 300 with the breaker and cheater.  600f?  Really?

Yes 600 for the red stuff. not sure for blue. Go buy or borrow and impact with some power and give it another try. Sometimes the nut has dug in a little and it's amazing how much it will take to get it loose.

Ok, well, because there is no way I can generate enough force by hand to ever break it loose and I have to be able to service my own clutches, I ordered a new air impact that puts out 1000f of torque. I will need an extension so it should still have enough to get it. I'll let you know how it goes.

The new impact better work cause I just committed to 500-dollars worth of new tires that will require a secondary spring adjustment along with the new primary sliders. Discount Tire was having a sale and couldn't pass it up. Went with my favorite tires, Grim Reapers, in a 27" -11s rear and 9s front.
