Quick question about relays
« on: June 19, 2019, 11:58:34 PM »
The one on the left is the fan relay from my 1000, 12V 20A.  The other one is one I have at work.  I googled the part number and it's also 12V 20A.  Both have the same footprint and pins but the new one is a little taller.  Can I use this in place of the stock one?  I understand how relays work and how to wire them up, but I'm not too sure about the difference here.  Just size?  Is the 12V 20A rating all I need to worry about?

Also related, I've now blown 1 fan fuse and 1 fan relay (at different times), and the dealer suggested I replace the 15A fuse with a 20 or 25.  Says the fan draws too much and 15A isn't enough, but should I throw a 20A in there?

From my experiences with relays, physical size can be different between manufacturers, but what is important is what you mentioned above, I'm sure youd be fine

If the fan relay coil is controlled by the ECU...such as they are in the new ones, then what that coil pulls is very important. Most 20 amp relays will be in the mA range but some can be a full amp. In that case it may have a negative effect on the ECU's board so..get the coil specs. Again, most are probably just fine. As for the increased fuse size...most of these fan motors pull 8-12 amps..mostly 10 and slightly under so 15 should be fine. Yours may...may have a problem motor. I would only go larger as a last resort. I don't think they run much more then 14-16AWG wire to those anyway. 15 amps are already pushing it unless its 10-12 AWG.

This is just so sad, CFMOTO cannot attract good knowledgeable dealers so they end up  with these 1/2 witt wannabe's.

Your dealer should simply replace the fan if for no other reason to rule it out as the problem. Then you the owner feels better that the dealer is at least trying to resolve the issue......very simple & most likely problem solved.

And another sad thing is it's so simple to test these things...and yet..it's so hard to get someone to just do it. They rather risk a fire then solve a simple problem.

They are a pretty reputable dealer so I wouldn't exactly call them half wit wannabe's, but I DO take everything they say with a grain of salt.  Admittedly, I often feel like I know as much or more about these things as they do, just from reading resources like this forum and FB groups, and I'll always try to get answers here first or at least confirm these things.   The thing about the fuse was told to me by the sales/parts guy who I regularly deal with, so he probably doesn't know nearly as much as the techs themselves.  This is why I come here to ask these things.  I had no problems over the weekend with that relay in the fan slot, but I'm looking into it further.  The data sheet for the taller one tells me the coil is rated at 80mA/150ohms with 960mW power consumption.  I can't find anything about the original yet.

I was being nice  :) you are trying to build a space ship out of a CFMOTO.

You've blown a fuse & relay, NWK has explained the risk of a different relay coil loading the ECU as well the risk using a larger fuse.

The load on both items that have failed is the cooling fan, it's not even difficult to measure the current draw......I think that has been covered as well.

Carry on with the space ship........or just replace the fan.
