How many have blown a 800 engine ?
« on: March 22, 2018, 03:20:38 PM »
Recently I have seen 2 blown engine here in the forum.
I want to know who have blow an engine and what have failed.

I have 5,500 km on mine, and the engine seem to run like the 1st Day. Never use a drop of oil.

I want to know if all the failed engine are related to the air filter.

Please post your engine problems and what have failed.

Thanks

The two main causes are the air filter or..overheating due to that thermoswitch.. so..heat...and dust..are neck and neck the main causes for these failures. Abuse and neglect are next in line..then failing parts falls in next...from what I've seen.

Don't forget a failing waterpump !! Overheating due to air filter and/or water system is here the main issue.
Therefor keep a close look at your temperature gauge.

Another problem being is the gasket on the air filter cover doesn't seal well at all, Had to do a little fabricating  to get a better seal and it made a world of difference they all seam  to have that gasket problem, Next time you clean your filter you will notice a lot of dust/dirt on the bottom right side were the filter housing bends around on the bottom right side of the cover

Noticed that on mine too. I started using a filter "RIM" grease on the gasket and seems to stop it but clearly there is a gap between the cover and seal there. What mod did you so to close that gap? I would like not to clean and re-grease mine every time I check it.

800 Engine Blown after 900 Miles.  It was 2 months past warranty.  Failed due to dusty air filter.  After the fact the dealer stated they recommend cleaning every 100 miles.  No Help from CFMOTO or dealer.  Will never recommend this brand or dealer again.

So sorry that happened.  We have been telling everyone for years not to even take delivery or put one mile on one without changing to at least the UniFilter so..no surprise there..most won't make a thousand miles with using the OE filter in dusty conditions...no matter how many times you change it (can't clean the OE paper filter without opening up the pours even more). Oddly..some do get higher miles though..haven't figured that out yet. People probably think I'm nuts but here's yet another reason why I run two Unifilters on mine.

So what your saying is that CFMOTO has a problem in which they have not fixed nor tried to mitigate the problem with their customers hence causing a large financial burden.  I guess they would make a lot more money on an engine replacement vs. changing the filter and updating the manual.

They have had a filter problem sense at least 2014 if not before. Heck some have even had their end caps fall right off. They came out with a new and improved foam filter last year that does work better then the paper but..not much. Nobody should trust any CFM air filter. Even the good paper ones are letting 20+ micron sized partials by. That's like.. flour-sized stuff. Yeah, they know they have a problem...that why they now have the foam one...and they approved the use of the TwinAir on them but we now know they too have a problem and no longer recommend them (see my last video). Unifilter with a quality foam filter oil is the best we have for now. So sorry for your loss...I hate to hear about these situations and it's not the engine's fault..no engine can take dust and dirt ingestion.

I too have felt the lack of support from dealer and manufacturer. I specifically asked about the air filter in the service department asking if they had any issues with them knowing all about it from reading here. They told me they have never had a problem. lol. It's a good machine if you know how to fix it. If you want dealer support you better have an awesome dealer, if you want manufacturer support... Good luck. I'll take it for the price because I can work on them.

NMK said it well, and I might add if I may that at least the Z's really benefit from re-plumbing the air intake so that the motor draws combustion air from a cleaner place than the motor and back tire compartment as it is stock, where the vehicle cannot help but to inhale the very dust that it is kicking up itself.
I still believe that the awful way the air intake is cobbled up behind the between-seats grill, was some sort of emergency measure of expediency and not an engineer's finished and approved design.

This was last fall.

My dealer recommended an air filter change after I brought the subject up. I changed the filter based on recommendations here, but to be fair, there wasn't any significant dust on the pipes from the original filter.

The specific dealer concern was the Jericho trails up in Berlin NH where the dirt has been pounded into a fine powder from all the heavy ATV traffic. In addition to that, many of the rail trails around the state are very dusty. The service dept had several RZRs in the shop that day with bad motors from dirt infiltration, and said this was common, so it isn't just a CFMoto issue.

The service manager said that CF MOTO was very responsive to his warranty claims.
