CFMoto cf188-B won't start
« on: October 08, 2019, 05:41:36 PM »
Hello All,

I bought a Buggy with a 2012 cfmoto cf188 engine in it with pretty low miles about a year ago. It worked great for 8 months then one day it would not turn over. It turned out the solenoid was bad so I changed it and it started and I let it sit for about 5 minutes and then when I tried to give it gas it died. I put more 93 octane gas in it and then it would still wouldn't start but for maybe one second. I changed the spark plug, checked for spark and its there, pulled the fuel line to ensure its pumping and it is, and pulled the injector out and it was spitting fuel when it turned it over. Last night I sprayed starter fluid in the intake and it started and then died when the fluid ran out. I can continuously spray the starter fluid in and it will stay running but it's almost like it's not getting enough fluid. Anyone have any ideas. I appreciate the help!! let me know if I need to submit any more information

Check the valve lash first, then compression, then test the Crank position sensor. If all that is OK, test the actual fuel pressure and finally valve timing.

Hey, Thanks for the reply,

I'm not too savvy when it comes to these engines but how would something like the valve lash be off. I mean when I spray starter fluid in the intake it runs as it should. It seems like its not getting enough gasoline. I've always used 93 octane. I did take the fuel line off at the injector and held the end of it with my finger while it primed but I didn't feel any [ressure but when I let go it all came out and I could see the build-up but couldn't feel it through my plastic glove. Does that sound right? My brother said it doesn't look like the injector is letting out much fuel at all if you compare it to a car but we don't know what to compare it to.

Thank You!

Pressure has to be in the 40lb range, compression has to be above 50lbs..a number of things can cause it not to get the fuel or air as needed or even fire when it's supposed to. If you don't have the manual..get one...and buy or borrow the proper test equipment and tools. Test all the mechanicals first, then electricals. Otherwise might need to take it in.

So it seems like it has too low of fuel pressure. I took the pump out and everything seemed clean including the sock. So does this mean it has a bad fuel pump? Also on the dash when I turn it over, after about 5 seconds the "R" for reverse begins to flash.

Thanks!

So it seems like it has too low of fuel pressure.

Just what does that mean? Did you test it with a fuel pressure gauge?

I haven't checked with a gauge yet, I am going to buy one after work today. I changed the fuel filter and the fuel line yesterday and that's when I took the fuel pump out. I primed the system by just turning the key to on and the stream came out only two to three inches and had an obvious curve down to it. I could definitely hold it back with my finger without any struggle. I took the injector out and turned it over and it seems to be spitting a little more fuel out with the clean hoses but its still not much.

I just checked it with the pressure gauge. I have a solid 5 pounds...

Alright!!! So after I checked the pressure I took all the fuel hose off except for about half a foot going into the injector. I put gasoline into a syringe and had someone turn over the engine while I pushed the syringe in to give pressure. The engine turned over and the buggy started! And held the start. So the pressure if definitely the issue. So is the fuel pump bad?

Thanks!

5 lbs?  Should be around 49 lbs.

What "buggy" did you buy? The 2012 CForce 500s had carbs, according to Alpha-Sports.

Its a 2012 EFI XY Groundpounder. Its a side by side. Pretty sure it was made in China. But it does have the 493cc cfmoto engine with CVT.

Looks fun. Yeah EFI usually will not run with less then 30psi so..,maybe it's the pump.

I was looking for one on the net and found this one:

Well if it does sound like the fuel pump where can I find one that will suit this 493cc. I can just replace the inside pump or buy the whole thing. I really don't care either way.

Neat looking toy! A Massimo if the internet is to be believed.

Take out the pump assembly and see if you can find any part numbers on it you can match against.
