First break-in maintanance
« on: October 20, 2015, 06:13:01 PM »
Hi guys! Just got my z-force 800ex, and i have some questions about maintanance! I live 8 hours from te nearest dealer so I have to do IT myself! Oil+filter change is easy, but i see all these grase-nipples, so I wonder if I should grease the nipples up right away? Are there any needs to tighten som bolts before i ride to much? In that case wich? Are there some other things I need to do in the break-in period?

Thanks for answers :-)

Yes, grease everything right away and check all the a-arm bolts for proper torque. Watch the coolant level in the tank under the hood as some pumps leak a little as they break in. Run it easy at first then start stretching the load and RPMs higher and higher with periods light usage between for cylinder cool-down. Then stretch it out again watching the temperature. Have fun.

My power steering bracket bolts came loose under the steering wheel. I think I'm the only one that has had this problem, though.

Go over the air box VERY well. I would highly recommend ditching the stock air filter and going with a TwinAir or Uni.

Be careful when removing the oil filter cover. There is an O-ring that you do not want to lose.

Dont go cheap on the oil. Either find a good "break-in" oil in 10w40 and continue to use that (for the extra zinc) or go with a good quality 15w40 diesel oil. I personally use Shell Rotella. Full synthetic is not only a waste of money, but will cause slipping issues with your wet clutch. A semi-syn is fine, and nothing wrong with a quality straight oil either. The most important thing to keep in mind is that its designed for a wet clutch (it will say on the bottle). Diesel oil WONT say that, but it IS wet clutch safe.

Grease those fittings! Do it on the regular. We like to use cold weather grease because these get used year round.

If you are mechanically inclined, completely flush out the cooling system and get a quality coolant. We use Maxima Coolanol. We are thinking on switching over to Evans Waterless Coolant after speaking with them over at the AIM Expo in Orlando.

With the 'waterless' coolants you don't have any corrosion problems, and they are 'greasier' on the waterpump seals.
