CVT clutch noise
« on: November 04, 2018, 07:55:41 AM »
Had my clutch reclocked to B2 yesterday by the dealer along with its first service.  Now when I accelerate to over 15 MPH I hear lots of rattling from the clutch area.  So what did they, or didn't they do?  Plan on taking it back to them this week but really like to talk to them in a level playing field.

Well, if done right and installed correctly there isn't anything that could make any kind of noise..especially sence the secondary's spring now had even more preload on it. There are a couple of things that could make it have some noise though. The first one that comes to mind is that they didn't seat the primary completely down enough to allow the cam plate to completely set through the splines and bottom out before torquing the retainer. That would leave the base of the clutch loose to make all kinds of noise along with damage the splines on the plate and the shaft.  The other thing that may cause some noise is actually not clocking the secondary after positioning the spring in the B & 2 holes...meaning that didn't twist and set the helix onto the ramps before final assembly. This would be noticeable as it would be even weaker then it was at B1 though. Now if that ran it with the cover off, and spun it up, that load without the support of the outer bearing in the cover has been known to destroy the single remaining shaft bearing and/or the one-way clutch...and in turn damage the wet clutch as well. Let's hope that didn't happen...but it is a possibility. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply NMK.  I am thinking it's the primary.  I can feel the difference in power compared to before.  Hopefully nothing was damaged.  It almost sounds like a bolt, slider or something is loose and when l get to 14-15 MPH it begins to rattle.

Also if you had them install sliders in it and they put some in backwards...that would do it too. All these things are simple but it's amazing how so many shops.. just can't get it right.

Right on the money NMK.  They didn't get the primary seated before they torqued it down.  Luckily nothing was damaged.
Amazing the difference reclocking the secondary to B2 makes over the stock setting, and that is just driving around my yard!  Now if those bandit springs would arrive so I can buy myself an early Christmas present LOL.
