Steering wheel off center?
« on: May 13, 2019, 11:57:07 PM »
I went on a good run on the weekend and partway through the day I noticed my wheel was off center to the right, probably about 2 o'clock.  It was always good and straight previously.  It was in a rocky part of my area and I did probably have at least a couple fairly hard hits on the front wheels.  It seems to still go down the road good and I don't see any bent tierods, just the wheel is off a bit.  Buddy that was with us has a Teryx and he says they are known to skip a tooth in the rack, any chance that's what happened here with the ZForce?  Should I just adjust TREs or pull the steering wheel off and turn it a spline or 2?

I had a similar thing happen with mine after some hard rock crawling. I inspected everything as well as I could and found nothing that had slipped or bent..yet it was clear something had. Prior to this I aligned it and the steering wheel so I started with the wheel- finding the center between the two stops and found the wheel itself was still centered so with straps I locked it in place. Then using the string method I check the toe. Found that not only did I loose my toe in of 3/32" but it had shifted to the left. This would indicate for one thing that the rack mounts may be loose and shifted. They were tight and didn't see any evidence of movement..but..it could have. With no bent tie rods and the rack all looking OK as well as the a-frames and frame, I reset it to all was centered and I had my toe in back. It's been OK sense but I avoid those kind of bolder-bashing situations now.

It has been known that the rack can and does bend in these quite often. More high quality Chinese steel.. However it's usually on impacts when the wheel is turned. I couldn't detect any in mine but if it bends too much there is some interference making hard spots.

I guess I'll have to get up under there and check things out closely, thank you.  I feel like mine was actually toed out a bit from the time I bought it, but I was eyeballing it and maybe the shape of the fenders threw me off.  I actually noted it in a short list of things I wanted to have checked out at its first service.  It handles great though and goes down the road straight, even if I take my hands off the wheel.  I'll try the string trick and see what I get.

The Canadian PDI spec is 2 - 4mm toe out, they believed that to be best after testing.

I've seen the 800 spindle where the tie rod mounts bend downward & of course the threaded portion of the tie rod maybe bent. Not sure about the Z1000

Counting the turns from center to lock each way may give you an idea is something has happened to the rack.

If you want to know which side is off, center the steering wheel & measure using the string. As alternative to the string you can use a straight edge that is elevated to spindle height. Set the straight edge parallel to the rear rim then measure the front rim, remember Cdn spec is 2mm toe out each side.
